America and Indonesia

I'm sure you are all aware of the problems that are occurring in America, not overly Geological I hear you cry, but it does have some side effects. Along with other various things, all of the National Parks have been closed down. As part of our MGeol year, we are going on a trip to America, and for three of the days we were supposed to be going to Death Valley, a national park, to study the geology. It now looks like that will have to be re-thought, unless America can sort things out! I've added a few links to BBC News, but I'm sure you've already seen it.

In other news, scientists may have found the location of a volcano that erupted in 1257, that was so large its signature has been recorded in the ice of the Arctic and the Antarctic. They believe that the culprit was the Samalas Volcano on Lombok Island in Indonesia. This is due to sulphur and dust traces being found, along with radiocarbon dating from ejected rock, ash and tree rings, that can be linked to the area and volcanic eruption. The Samalas Volcano is the only one that fits all the geochemical criteria, from the ice cores and various other dating methods. For more information, see the link below.
