On Wednesday
we continued to examine the fault scarp and managed to determine that it was a
normal fault
with
a small amount of strike slip movement, which appears to have moved more than
once. We determined this because there were two stages of erosion along a part
of the fault scarp, and the calculations that we used to find its age came up
with two different results.

The rest of
the day was quite unsuccessful thanks to the heavy rain that decided to set in.
We left the fault at 12pm and drove around Big Pine, peering at the geology
through the windows. We saw a few interesting sites, but didn’t get to do any
work, and at 4:30pm we gave up and headed back to the same hotel that we stayed
in last night.
